Authorised Gas Tester

Course Overview

Gas Tester is designed to support all personnel responsible for a gas tester operation, with the knowledge to safely conduct gas tests for oxygen levels, flammable and toxic gases. Students will have the opportunity to build the knowledge to conduct gas testing within confined spaces and awareness associated with confined space hazards and will obtain relevant knowledge of gas measuring and monitoring equipment and documenting gas test results.

Course Delivery

The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions covering the following topics:

  • Explain the definition of a confined space.
  • Name the confined space hazards. 
  • Confined space entry safety precautions. 
  • Types of gases and their origin on a rig site. 
  • Describe the air composition. 
  • Difference between % and ppm. 
  • Reformulate the acceptable oxygen levels and their consequences. 
  • H2S & CO acceptable levels and exposition consequences. 
  • What is the LEL and acceptable measures? 
  • Gas tester features and procedures including calibration & bump test.
  • Realize a gas test with different tank configurations. 
  • Fill in the PTW for confined spaces and hot work

Course Requirement

There are no mandatory prerequisites to attend this course. However, delegates must have a valid medical certificate before attending this course. 

The course is designed for HSE Representatives, Drillers, Assistant Drillers, Derrick hands, scaffolders, riggers,  telecom riggers, and any other person whose duties require performing Rescue At Height operations.

Medical Requirement

  • Written and practical tests will be performed
  • Our Instructor will perform a competency assessment during the practical part of the training.
  • Successful completion of the course and a pass mark of 80% or above will result in a TAMSE issued Certificate valid for two (2) years.
