PPE Inspection
Course Description
This course provides skills for inspecting PPE for work at height. Designed to satisfy the inspection requirements of several UK regulations (PUWER, LOLER and WAHR) and can be tailored for clients to meet their specific requirements. Participants learn the requirements for obsolescence, care and maintenance for a range of personal equipment and are taught specific inspection criteria for each category of product. The different requirements for metal and textile items is explained, together with the need for adequate documentation and record keeping required to satisfy the regulations.
Practical experience on this Inspection of PPE – Competent Person course is provided in inspecting and assessing the condition of PPE for work at height. On completion of the Inspection of PPE course, participants will be competent to carry out thorough examinations of equipment and keep traceable records of this under LOLER and WaH regulations.

- Current HSE guidance and research
- WAHSA guidance notes for inspecting fall protection equipment
- Manufacturer’s requirements for marking and labeling
- Understanding product user instructions
- Obsolescence and longevity
- Compatibility of system components
- Traceability, conformity and certification
- Storage, cleaning and maintenance
- Test methods for EN 361, 354, 355
- Pre-use checking of equipment
Practical Skills Covered
- Identifying components of fall protection systems
- Understanding basic design requirements
- Understanding critical defects
- Methods of inspection for textile and metal items
- Methods of recording
- Carrying out inspections according to BS 8437 checklists
- Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.
Course Requirement
It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that all relevant pre-requisites are met to attend this course and that the evidence is provided on the first day of the course e.g. in-date certificates for revalidation courses. Failure to meet any of these pre-requisites may result in the participant being asked to leave the course. No refund will be given in this event.
