Tower Climbing And Rescue

Course Objective

  • To enable the user to access the tower structure safely and allow them to use all work-at-height safety equipment including work restraint, work positioning and fall arrest systems.  
  • To understand risk assessments and method statements and to enable a simple work task to be undertaken at height. 
  • To enable the worker to carry out rescue procedures and understand rescue methods

Course Content

  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (updated 2007).
  • Safe systems of work.
  • Methods of fall protection. 
  • Anchor identification and selection.
  • Radio frequency hazard awareness  
  • Work restraint systems. 
  • Work positioning systems.
  • Fall arrest methods. 
  • Understanding of suspension intolerance.  
  • Risk assessing, identifying hazards and planning the work task.    
  • Inspection care and maintenance. 
  • Carrying out a simple work task at height. 
  • Carrying out a rescue at height using different rescue devices.
  • Creating a rescue plan prior to the commencement of work task. 
  • Casualty handling at height and at ground level.    
  • Reporting of accidents and incidents following the event.

Skill Base

  • Fitting and adjustment of harness.
  • Fitting and use of twin lanyards.
  • Understanding practically the use of the energy absorbing lanyards.
  • Fitting and use of work positioning equipment. 
  • Correct use of PPE anchors and anchor systems. 
  • Methods of ladder climbing. 
  • Correct use of fall arrest blocks. 
  • Practical use of fixed vertical fall arrest systems. 
  • Movement around a tower structure at height. 
  • Practical use of rescue devices and lowering methods.    
  • Casualty handling at height and at ground level.      
  • Off weight rescue technique           
  • Simple raising and lowering systems to recover casualties from height.   The ability to create a rescue plan and implement it to the work task.

Medical Requirement

  • A signed statement of medical fitness to be signed prior to the commencement of the course. A reasonable level of fitness will be required to complete the practical element of this course.
